Often when shopping online for books on woodblock prints or printmakers the book listing does not include any examples of the inner pages. They usually show the front cover but that’s about it. Even in Amazon, which has excellent preview features for books they don’t often have them for books related to wooblock prints. I guess they probably sell in to small a number so no-one feels it’s worth the effort?
So, if your looking at purchasing a book (for example) Yoshida Toshi: Nature, Art and Peace by Eugene M. Skibbe then you will find a cover shot but nothing to show you inside the book. It’s very much a case of ‘pot luck’ as to what you get after buying the book. I have a number of books on woodblock printmakers so will begin to post pictures of inner pages so you have some idea of the books content.
My current book ‘library’ includes:
Yoshida Toshi: Nature, Art and Peace by Eugene M. Skibbe
Elizabeth Keith – The Printed Works by Richard Miles
Between Two Worlds – The Life and Art of Lilian May Miller by Kendall H. Brown
Bertha Lum – American Printmakers – A Smithsonian Series
Helen Hyde – American Printmakers – A Smithsonian Series
A Printmaker in Paradise – The Art and Life of Charles W. Bartlett by Richard Miles and Jennifer Saville
The Complete Woodblock Prints of Yoshida Hiroshi by Abe Publishing
Woodblock Prints of Joshua Rome
The Catalogue Raisonné of Tsuchiya Koitsu by DR. Ross Walker and Toshikazu Doi
Takasawa Keiichi – Painting Collection (around 70 pages)
Takasawa Keiichi – Painting Collection (around 230 pages)
I’ll update the list over time and link the titles above to posts detailing the book and its content.
Hi Mike,
The Toledo Museum of Art published recently a beautiful book on their 1930 Shin Hanga exhibition: Fresh Impressions: Early Modern Japanese Prints. I would definitively recommend it as a valuable addition to any good library on 20th century Japanese Woodblock prints.
Kind regards…….Serge
Hi Serge,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your comment. I’ve been busy lately so my woodblock hobby has had to take a back seat. Thanks for the heads-up about the book I’ll get onto google and do a search for it. Hopefully someone has put up some sample images from the internal pages for me view.
Regards, MIke.
